Eleanor attended the event with a distinct purpose in mind. She was looking for a new stallion for her farm and she found exactly what she was searching for in San Jacinto Jullyen V (Jullyen El Jamaal x Sweet Klassique V by US National Champion Fairviews Klassique), a bay three-year-old stallion that looks exactly like his pedigree – beautiful and athletic. Eleanor explained her choice of this impressive young horse, “The loss of Hesa Zee was a big blow. We have a good group of his daughters and a stockpile of his frozen semen, but I was looking for a new stallion and this colt looks like he has great potential. He just arrived at Gary Ferguson’s farm in Texas and Gary will show Jacinto at this year’s U.S. Nationals in Western Pleasure Junior Horse. Our future plan is to breed Jacinto to our Hesa Zee daughters. With his looks and his pedigree, we think it will be a very good cross.”
Eleanor also purchased the two-year-old bay filly Sha La La Jullyen V (*Jullyen El Jamaal x Sweet Siesta V by Desperado V). Eleanor had gone to the event in search of a stallion, but the filly caught her attention too. “I saw the filly in her stall and went back to see her a couple of times, but we got busy looking at other horses and got distracted. Then, they brought her out during the presentation of sale horses. I saw her trot across the stage and that was all it took. I went straight to Sheila’s assistant and asked if the filly was still available and she said the filly was on hold. I didn’t waste a minute. I ran to the car to get my checkbook and the filly went from hold to sold! She is now at Gary Ferguson’s too and he will start her under saddle when she’s ready. We will breed her to Hesa Zee, with the frozen semen we’ve stored, when the time is right. I think she will be a great cross with Hesa. I have always admired Sheila’s breeding program and I am really excited to now have two very good Varian horses added to my program.”

On the official AHA 2015 U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Sport Horse Championship web page, you can find the link to this year’s entry statistics, which are current as of 8-12-15. The entry statistics show 114 Performance or In Hand classes including dressage, Hunter pleasure, working hunter over fences, carriage pleasure driving, show hack and more. One of the most interesting facts is the size of the classes at the Sport Horse Nationals – they are much larger than most of the classes at other AHA national events. The class with the most entries to date is Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle ATR with 61 entries. That compares with the largest class from the Canadian National show, Western Pleasure AAOTR 40 & Over with 30 entries.
Trainer, exhibitor and judge, Martha Rattner of Rattner Bloodstock, in Georgetown, Kentucky shared a few insights into the Sport Horse world. “There most significant differences between showing at the Sport Horse Nationals and other national events are the competitors – they are mainly owner exhibitors who enjoy hands-on experience with their horses. There is really no prize money to speak of at the sport horse show; it’s more about the sense of accomplishment when a rider or handler achieves their goal. Most of the exhibitors train their own horses. They work like hell and put in a lot of hours working with their horses. Dressage is one of the largest divisions and they don’t have to be a professional or be with a big training barn to do well. I like the fact that the judges are generally not from the main ring set; they judge on merit and performance, not names and pedigrees. I feel like if I win there, I really accomplished something special and if I loose, it’s generally to a rider who had a better performance.”
Clearly, many owners enjoy and support the U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Sport Horse Championship show. Martha added, “These are grass root owners who are not driven by a frenetic atmosphere, they value classical horsemanship, their relationship with their horse and a sense of accomplishment more than anything else. I enjoy seeing all the new people and the way people work together. It’s not a perfect show, there is room for improvement, but it provides a great opportunity for people to show and enjoy their horses.”

In an interview with Bill Addis, of Addis Live On Line Auctions, he shared some exciting news about future plans with Cal Poly Pomona – W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, “I have worked with the center for a number of years as a consultant. The center has a historically significant breeding program, which produces over 15 foals a year, sired by some of the top stallions in the breed. In an effort to assist the program in raising funds and marketing their bloodstock, we have agreed to manage an annual sale of their three-year-old horses. We are really excited about this opportunity to work with the center to promote and preserve their program, while offering the Arabian horse community some top quality show and breeding stock. Although our sales are primarily live online auctions, we also offer services for on-sight sales. Because the Cal Poly Pomona – W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center hosts a public open house once a month, we are discussing the possibility of holding a live auction at one of these functions. It could be a really fantastic opportunity to promote the Arabian breed to the general public in a fun and exciting way.”
The next Addis Live On Line Auction is scheduled for September 22, 2015. Consignments are currently being accepted. For detailed information, please visit the website at: www.addisliveonlineauctions.com
Arabian Horse Celebration Performance and North American Halter Championships Cancelled - On Thursday, August 13th, the Arabian Horse Celebration President, Bob Battaglia and Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance Chairman, Jeff Sloan, announced the cancellation of the event.
According to a press release from the show organizers, “The AHC and NAHC joined forces, not only to promote the Arabian horse, but with the hope of presenting a united discipline horse show that would be appealing to breeders, owners, trainer and enthusiasts. In addition to thrilling competition, they were providing education, a stallion row, sale horse presentations, shopping, parties, fun and camaraderie to old and new Arabian horse lovers.
It was decided to hold the event in Louisville, KY in the legendary Freedom Hall that holds so many wonderful memories for so many of us. Unfortunately, despite all of the efforts made to make this show happen, the support from the breeding community was not as strong as we anticipated or hoped for, and so at this time we are left with no choice other than to cancel the show.”

Katie shared her excitement about this exciting new venture, “I am honored and thrilled to be a part of the Stella Bella family. Michelle, Ben and their three children are passionate about their horses and it will be so much fun working with them. They are definitely interested in learning to ride and to compete in performance, which is something I have always loved. In addition to teaching riding, I also will manage the farm and the marketing program for the horses. The farm is currently under construction and renovation. They are taking the property from beautiful to stunning! It will be the perfect setting for their world-class horses. This is an exciting new chapter for me. I was a part of the Rohara Arabians family for many years and I am so grateful to Roxann, Karl and John Rannenberg for everything - especially their friendship and support over the years.”
Stella Bella Arabians are the proud owners of exotic black yearling colt Artemas GA (J Bellagio x Duchess of Marwan) bred by Sally Bedeker. Artemas GA is the 2015 Arabian Breeder's World Cup Silver Champion Colt in Las Vegas and the 2015 Scottsdale Champion Yearling Colt. For more information visit the Stella Bella Arabians website at:
The classes with the most entries are all in the performance divisions with the top classes in western pleasure, hunter pleasure and dressage. The single class with the most entries is the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 40 and Over. Performance competition is without a doubt the driving force of the show. The significance of this data is valuable for making future breeding decisions and marketing to these eager participants.

Knop explained his interest in Morafic, “As a youngster, I worked for Edwin and Corky Sutton of HyWynne Farm and they had the Morafic son, Amir Ibn Shamah. I was very connected to this stallion; he was an excellent sire and produced many champions. I never forgot him and it made me wonder about other Morafic offspring.”
Morafic was an important, influential and historic sire bred by the Egyptian Agricultural Organization and imported to the United States by Douglas and Margaret Marshall of Gleannloch Farms in 1965. According to the Arabian Horse Data Source, Morafic sired 260 offspring. Knop continued with his thoughts about the straight Egyptian stallion, “It is amazing to me to see how many times I see Morafic’s name in the pedigrees of today’s horses. His influence is incredible. At one time, I had thought of publishing a book. But researching and collecting the images was extremely difficult. I thought Facebook would be a good place to share what I have collected and allow others to contribute photos and information too.”
You can find Morafic’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ProgenyofMorafic

The Arabian Foal Festival was created as a showcase for the horses bred by the members of the Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association. A club membership is available to all online through the club’s website. There are two divisions of competition, novice and amateur. Novice handlers have had limited experience showing and have not had any significant placements at shows such as Scottsdale, Vegas, Nationals or at the Regional level. Novice horses have never been in a professional training barn. It may have been shown previously, but only by an amateur. The amateur handler must meet the AHA criteria for an amateur handler. The amateur horse may have been trained in a professional training barn, but shown only by an amateur and with no significant placements.
Arabian horse breeder, Henry Metz, an Arabian Foal Festival Board Member shared, “The atmosphere we want to create for the show is no stress and lots of fun. It gives owners an opportunity for owners to enjoy a hands-on experience with their horses. These horses are not professionally trained or shown. Weanlings are presented at their mothers’ side. There is no hard stand up, no cosmetics and minimal clipping. It’s about showing the natural beauty of the horses.”
The show also provides educational opportunities for owners and spectators. Henry Metz explained, “To keep things stress free, there will be no more than five horses in a class. The judges rank the class, and the champion and reserve champion are pulled out, while the others are excused. The judges will then explain their reasons for their placings, focusing on the positive aspects of the winners. The goal is to educate the spectators on the desirable qualities and characteristics of the Arabian horse. In addition, we like to keep things fresh and fun by doing something different every show. This year, we have a class called, “Surprise The Judge.” This class is for male or female horses that are four years and older, but have never been shown. We think this will be great fun and we hope many friends – old and new - will join us for this special weekend in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley!”

Jubilee activities included a stallion showing, a presentation of sale horses and the wonderful and highly anticipated mare walk, which takes place out in the fields with the Varian mares. In addition, there were educational programs throughout both days. Sheila’s guest speaker was the highly acclaimed horseman, Lester Buckley, who spoke about training techniques for owners of every level. Sheila also gave a seminar, “Trailer Loading the Varian Way.”
A highlight for many of the weekend included the presentation of the wonderful young stallion Major Mac V; he carries on the Varian tradition through 6 generations of his pedigree, directly back to the great stallion Bay Abi. The 2015 Youth U.S. National Arabian and Half Arabian Championship Horse Show is in full swing! The show runs from July 18th to the 25th in Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to AHA, Youth Nationals debuted in 1993 and has been AHA's premier youth event ever since. Competition for youth competitors includes halter, English, western, hunter, driving, side saddle, native costume, reining, working cow, and dressage combined with leadership training, games, contests and parades making this event one of the most exciting in the country.
If you cannot attend the show, you can still catch the excitement by watching the live feed of the classes. Watching the Half-Arabian English Pleasure JTR 13 & Under, I was impressed with the extreme quality of the horses – they were absolutely gorgeous. All the riders were turned out beautifully in their handsome saddle seat suits. I was totally amazed by these young riders’ skill and horsemanship.

The 2015 Arab Horse Society National Show will be held on July the 23rd to the 25th at
Three Counties Show Ground, Malvern, England. There will be In-hand Breeding classes and Performance classes for Purebreds, as well as Anglos and Part-bred Arabs. The event also features The National Crabbet In-Hand Championships!
Rules can sometimes differ from country to country and are most often established by the country’s breed organization. No matter where you are, there always seems to be a lot of discussion about the best way to present horses to the judges for evaluation. Here are the rules for showing in Halter as noted by the Arab Horse Society for their 2015 AHS National Show:
All horses forward MUST be shown in a natural manner. The pose must be natural, i.e. one fore leg slightly behind the other and one hind leg slightly behind the other. The head should be held with the neck showing natural arch and curve of throat line, so that the neck is not uncomfortably stretched or raised. The horse should be trained to stand sensibly in this position with expression of interest in the handler. A frozen pose is unacceptable.
Any unnatural posing, flicking with a whip or circling when being run out, will result, at the Judge’s discretion, in the horse being judged as though no presentation or display had been possible and therefore penalized accordingly.
Whips must be no more than the length of a cane 65 cm. Halters can be modern as long as they are comfortable for the horse.
It certainly is food for thought and it would be interesting to see how horses presented in this low-key manner respond and perform. More information about The 2015 Arab Horse Society National Show including schedule, directions, etc. can be found at: www.ahsshowsandevents.com

A rare breed becomes even more rare. According to the Arabian Horse Association’s website, dated April 27, 2015, there were 925 purebred Arabians registered so far in 2015. This compares to the total number of horses registered in 2014, which was 3489. The data posted on the AHA website records the past 15 years. During that time, the year with the most horses registered was 2000, with 9,660 purebred horses. The number of purebred horses owners have registered has declined each year since 2000. We encourage everyone to register their Arabian horse.
